Do You Know Your CBD Manufacturer? How to Choose the Right Formulator
With the CBD market still in its earliest phases and loosely regulated, it is critically important to ensure that the CBD manufacturers you work with are experienced and ethical enough to entrust with the safety and satisfaction of your customers.
With the CBD industry expected to boom in the next few years, many are rushing to take advantage of this opportunity, including some unsavory characters looking to cash in while the getting is good.
If you want to be successful in the CBD market long term – and stay off the FDA’s radar – it is a smart move to work exclusively with reputable partners. This will also help the CBD industry legitimize itself. When vetting potential CBD manufacturing partners, here are a few points to consider before making your choice.
Where Do They Source Their Hemp Extract?
Hemp is grown worldwide across different regions and climates, and the quality of this hemp varies greatly by source.
In some places, hemp is grown on an industrial scale for its fiber first, with CBD hemp extract being created as a secondary byproduct. Hemp oil from sources like this is not ideal and may be contaminated from the cultivation or extraction process.
Other regions, like the European Union, grow hemp for a full range of uses, including CBD oil. To protect the integrity of the hemp, this hemp is grown without the use of chemicals. Expert growers that have been cultivating hemp for generations use care to create a pure, raw product that can be formulated into safe consumer products.
Equally important is the way the CBD oil is extracted. There are varying techniques using different types of solvents, including CO2 or hydrocarbons like butane. Supercritical CO2 extraction is most commonly used for CBD extraction because it is non-toxic, removing the risk of residual contamination of the extracted oil.
The CBD oil from Nutralife Wellness Labs is sourced from EU and U.S. grown hemp and extracted using CO2 to ensure the products made are safe and reliable.
Do They Follow Regulations and Standards?
Any CBD manufacturing partner should have all the necessary permits and licenses to operate in your state. This includes compliance with current Good Manufacturing Processes to ensure products produced are safe and of the highest quality. These manufacturing guidelines help set standards for consumer products. A similar set of operating procedures are offered by the International Standards Organization (ISO) to encourage adherence to international quality standards. Proper permitting, and adherence to regulations and operational standards, protects customers and adds to the longevity of your brand.
Can They Produce Certificates of Analysis?
When working with a CBD manufacturer, you’ll want to be sure the ingredients used in the creation of your products are safe. This is especially true with CBD hemp oil. A bioaccumulator, hemp absorbs and concentrates compounds in the soil it is grown in. This includes any chemical herbicides, pesticides, and fertilizers used in the cultivation process.
A Certificate of Analysis, or COA, from a third-party testing lab demonstrates safety and quality, not just for any hemp-derived ingredients but for other ingredients as well. However, don’t trust a COA just because it is from a third-party lab. Testing labs, especially those testing cannabis products, have been notoriously inaccurate at best, and dishonest at worst.
It is also a good idea, when possible, to verify COA’s by sending them to a lab of your choice. This extra verification gives you the peace of mind that your products will be as safe as they can be.
Do They Have CBD Experience?
You’ll also want to ask whether or not your prospective manufacturer has direct experience working with CBD as an ingredient. The Nutralife Wellness Labs team has more than 30 years combined experience in the CBD industry and has been working with hemp extract and CBD as a product ingredient since 2018. We know how to create top-quality CBD products your customers will love.
